Win a SIGNED copy of The Rithmatist

So Alex and I fully realize that we have been super busy and, maybe, just maybe, slacking a little as bloggers.  We are human and both are married with full times jobs.  I know; crazy.

But, we want you to know that we appreciate you guys for sticking around these past couple of months and want to do something to welcome new readers, so we're giving away a signed copy of The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson!

I know!  It's because we love you guys so much and want you to know it!  So, now the rules!

-You can do each thing once per day (So you can retweet us, share us on FB, comment, etc., once a day.)

-As much as I hate to say this, you must live in the contiguous US, as per usual, because unfortunately, neither Alex, nor I, have won the lottery or inherited a large amount of money since the last time we had a contest, so we STILL don't have the money to sent it outside the contiguous US.

-Contest HAS ALREADY STARTED SO GET ON IT!

-And it ends on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:59 PM  We'll announce the winner on Sunday.

-Winner must provide us with a valid US address within one week of winning the prize.  If the winner does not claim the prize, we will pick another winner and the same rules apply.  If BOTH winners do not claim it, we can do with the book as we please.

-The prize will be mailed via USPS, no signature required, with a tracking number.  The number will be emailed to the winner the day that it has been mailed.  Alex and I are not responsible for delivery errors made by the USPS.

-All the rules/regulations/whatever else you can think of as a loophole are up to Alex and I.

If there are any questions or comments, just let us know.  Otherwise, we'll be giving it away in ONE WEEK!  Good Luck!

Winner of the Signed Unwind!

And the winner is....

BRENT FROST!!!

We sent Brent an email so that we can send him his signed copy!

The giveaway was a HUGE success!  We had so many people enter it, probably more than we've ever had before.  We hope that we keep seeing everyone hanging around the blog and stay tuned!  We actually do giveaways pretty frequently around here because we basically just love our readers.

Thank you to everyone who entered!

Win a Signed Copy of Unwind

So do you remember when I met Neal Shusterman?

Yeah, I do too.

What you may not know is that I have a signed copy of Unwind to give away to you!!

Mostly we want to say CONGRATS to all the NaNo winners and we want to say GREAT JOB to all the people who made a go at it but might not have won.  Basically, we're just proud of anyone who wrote this month, and as a reward, we're giving away this book.

I know: the excitement is unbearable.  So, here are just a few rules about the contest:

-You can enter once per day.  And you can do each THING once per day.  So you can tweet us every day and comment every day AND share the giveaway on Facebook.  So many ways to win!

-You have to live in the contiguous United States.  It's not that we don't LIKE people in other countries, but we just can't afford that shipping.

-Contest Starts today, midnight (so it's going on right now!) and ends, Saturday, Midnight.

-Winner will be announced on Sunday, December 7, 2014

-Winner must provide a valid address within one week of winning.  If they do not, the next winner will be chosen and the same rules apply.  If neither claim the prize, we will choose what to do with the book at our discretion. (probably give it away to one of our friends as an awesome Christmas gift.)

-Prize will be mailed via United States Postal Service, with no signature required. A delivery confirmation number will be provided to the winner upon mailing, via email. We are not responsible for delivery errors made by the USPS.

-At the end of the day all rules/regulations/entries/whatever else are up to our discretion

So start in with those entries, and we'll choose the winner in a week!

If I Stay Signed Copy Giveaway!

Gayle Forman and ChloĆ« Grace Moretz came to my mall awhile back and were signing ALL THE THINGS!!!  So, since I work at a bookstore, I bought a copy of the book to give to YOU readers and it's signed by BOTH Moretz and Forman!  EXCITING!!!

Why yes, that IS an actual copy of the book we're giving away.

This contest, though, we're going to make you really earn your contest entry.  We will be posting on the blog, as usual, and Facebook (as... mostly usual, though we've been less good about that as of late.)  You need to comment in one of those two places to enter.

So, rules:

- Your comments have to be at least two sentences long and something that might start a discussion.  "I liked this book.  It was good" does not count.  "I really like time travel sci-fi.  I think Octavia Butler is the best writer of our time" would count.  You're attempting to engage the opinions of others.

- You can not comment spam just to win.  However, if you end up engaging in a discussion with someone (including us), we will count each comment as an entry, as long as they abide by rule one and stay relevant to the post/discussion (if you start going off into a tangent about how hot Hugh Jackman is, I'll agree, but will no longer be counting your comments as entries.)

- Inevitably, all comments are up to our discretion if they are counted as entries or not.

- Comment has to be on a post within the last week (or so).  We're not going to go checking months and years worth of back posts just to see if you put a comment there.  Sorry.

- We will randomly pick a winner on August 22, 2014, the same day that the movie comes out!

- As per usual with these contest, contiguous US.  Sorry to all our international fans (and I know that we have a few.)  We just can't afford the shipping.  We will be shipping it USPS with no signature required.

- The winner must provide a valid address within one week of winning (that would be August 29).  Email us at reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com.  If they do not, we will pick another winner.  If the SECOND winner does not claim it, we'll dispose of the book as we see fit (AKA I'll give it to my co-blogger or sell it on eBay.)

- Please keep it civil.  We love discussions on this page, and we're totally ok with disagreeing with people! (In fact, we think it makes it more interesting.)  However, if it starts to get inappropriate or mean-spirited, we reserve the right to moderate.  This applies to especially foul language, name calling, or anything else we deem to be really jerky.

Good luck!!

This is in no way endorsed by the movie, the actress, or the author.

Big Box o' Books Giveaway Winner!

So sorry for the super-late post, everybody!

You may have noticed that the Rafflecopter thing wasn't working, so I had to count up entries myself and use a random number generator to sort out who won, and that person is...

The People Watcher!!!

Congratulations to The People Watcher! Email us your shipping address to reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com and I will ship you a box full to bursting with new-to-you books!

Also, congratulations to Cassy, who had a beautiful, lovely, amazing wedding! Since you guys, dear readers, are the bookish sorts (I would presume), I'll give you a photo I took of one of her centerpieces because I thought they were amazing, and you're likely to agree:

(The little cat is not part of the scenery, that's
for another blog of mine. Multitasking, here.)

Another Wedding, Another Giveaway!

Yes, friends and readers: It's time to give away a box of my books for Cassy's wedding, just like how Cassy gave away a box of her books for my wedding! (Remember?)

Just like with Cassy' big box o' books, I've pulled a little over a dozen books off my shelf. Some of them have been on this blog, some have not. (And to be entirely honest, a couple of them actually belonged to my husband. But hey... diversity in reading materials.)

Rules time:

- You can enter once per method per day. The methods are: follow @ReviewMeTwice, like us on Facebook, or comment on this post!

- You have to live in the contiguous United States. No offense to non-contiguous-US residents, but shipping a box full of books is already kind of expensive.

- The winner will be announced Monday, June 10 (I wanted to say it'll be on Sunday, June 9, but I have a wedding to be at that day...)

- The winner must provide us with a valid mailing address (again: within the contiguous United States) by emailing it to reviewmetwice@gmail.com within one week of being announced. If they don't, I'll get the next winner. If that winner doesn't provide an address within a week of that announcement, I'll donate the books to the library (which is super easy, since I work there).

- You aren't choosing books here; I have a box with books in it already, and you get them all. If you don't like them, you can do whatever you want with them: craft with them, prop up furniture with them, sell them, donate them, read them anyway, whatever.

- I'll be shipping them via USPS, with no signature required. The winner will get a delivery confirmation number sent to the same email address used to send us the mailing address.

The giveaway is already open, and closes at 11:59pm next Sunday, June 9. So start entering!!!

Author Bio - Elizabeth Lowell and OUR WINNER!!

So, it's not often that I learn something out of these author bios (most of them are just the who/what/where and while I TECHNICALLY learn things, it's nothing surprising.)  However, I did learn something about Lowell that I was surprised, mainly because I've read a number of her things.

Her real name is Ann Maxwell.

Ok, so there are a lot of authors who take pseudonyms, but usually I KNOW about them, and I had no idea about hers.  She's written sci-fi, mystery, romance and even non-fiction.  She's actually quite well-versed in a lot of genres (which, I think I'll have to check out because I always thought that she would be a great writer if she managed to stop with the cliche romance novels.)

Lowell also has co-written a litany of books with her husband, Evan Maxwell (though, he seems to deal exclusively with crime/mystery novels.)

She has a BA in literature and, wrote her first novel because she had already read every single Science Fiction book in her library and at her local bookstore.  So she sat down and wrote a book she wanted to read.

And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for, the WINNER of our box of books contest:

COLLEEN!!

We'll send Colleen and email so she can claim her books!

Box of Books Giveaway!

Since my super awesome co-blogger is getting married ON SATURDAY (I can hardly believe it), I'm running a little giveaway in her honor!

I have a box of books to give away to YOU, the reader.  I will pick some books off of my shelf (some that have been reviewed on this blog and some that haven't), and then ship them to whomever our winner is!

So here are the rules!

  • You can enter once per day.  And you can do each THING once per day.  So you can tweet us every day and comment every day AND share the giveaway on Facebook.  So many ways to win!
  • You have to live in the contiguous United States.  It's not that we don't LIKE people in other countries, but we just can't afford that shipping.
  • Winner will be announced on Monday, March 17 (Mainly because I am going to be in VA Beach for a wedding and won't get to the post until then.)
  • Winner must provide a valid address within one week of winning.  If they do not, the next winner will be chosen and the same rules apply.  If neither claim the prize, the books will be donated.
  • You do not get to choose the books; they're just going to be a random collection of things from my shelves.  It's also all or nothing.
  • Prize will be mailed via United States Postal Service, with no signature required. A delivery confirmation number will be provided to the winner upon mailing, via email. We are not responsible for delivery errors made by the USPS.
You can start entries 12:00 am this evening (mainly because I waited too long and Rafflecopter wouldn't let me make a giveaway for today.)

Good luck!!

Scrivener Giveaway!

That's right, dear readers... we have another giveaway for you! This time, it's to get you geared up for NaNoWriMo!

As you probably remember from last year, November is NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. The idea is that you write 50,000 words of your very own novel between 12:01am on November 1 and 11:59pm on November 30.

One of the great prizes for winners (anyone who meets that goal) is a discount on a writing tool called Scrivener.

Scrivener is a great software that helps you organize your thoughts (characters, plot points, settings, quotes, whatever else you want to organize for your novel/play/movie script/short story/whatever you're writing) and it's entirely adaptable to whatever you want. You can get a free trial at literatureandlatte.com. Cassy and I have both used Scrivener, and we think it's the bee's knees.

The cat's pajamas, if you will.

So! To the point... we're going to GIVE AWAY a copy of Scrivener! For you to use for NaNoWriMo or any other writing projects your heart desires! Here's what you have to do...

Write us a one-sentence story.

That's it! We'll pick our favorite, and its author will be the winner! Here are the important details:

- You can submit as many stories as you want!
- You can submit your stories by email (reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com), as a comment on our Facebook wall, or as a tweet @reviewmetwice
- Please only submit each story ONCE. (Don't submit the same story by email, Facebook, AND Twitter... just pick one.) You can submit different stories by different methods, though. (If you submit three stories, you could do one in each method, or all by one method... totally up to you!)
- You have until 11:59pm EST on Saturday, November 2, 2013 to submit your stories.
- You don't have to adhere to any genre; we want comedy, horror, romance, drama, tragedy, history, sci-fi, fantasy... anything you come up with!
- The winning story will be shared on Sunday, November 3, 2013 here on the blog. The author will also be notified in the manner in which the winning story was submitted. (If the winning story was emailed to us, we'll email you. If you tweeted it, we'll tweet you. If it was on Facebook, you'll get a Facebook PM from us.)
- The winner will have to provide us with a valid email address to which we can send the information on claiming their prize.
- There are no geographic boundaries to this contest! We don't have to mail anything to you, so you DON'T have to be from the contiguous U.S.!

Confused as to what we want to read? Here's a fine example of a story you might submit (this one happens to be from a story that may-or-may-not be true, about Ernest Hemingway winning a bet by writing a six-word story):

For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

That's a particularly sad example, but do you get the idea? One sentence that tells (or even hints at) an entire story.

We're going to contact Sheila for her prize and thanks to everyone who entered!

By Its Giveaway

Ok, so I know usually on Saturdays we do "By Its Cover" but this week, we're all about promoting Kinnaird's book, The Red Sun Rises, and the giveaway to WIN A COPY!  Exciting, I know. :)  So, in case you missed EVERYTHING this week, here's a little blurb and some other opinions on the book!

Eren Anderson is a freak among freaks. At 17 years old, he doesn't fit in with his peers in the tiny town of All Hallows and despite being born into it, he most certainly doesn't fit in among The Order of Our Mother, the secret nature worshiping society that has harnessed the ability cast spells and believes vampires are not only real, but their deadliest enemies. Eren is turned into a vampire after an attack by the local coven master, but that is the least of his worries...

In a post-Twilight world, “The Red Sun Rises” is a YA novel intended to give vampires their bite back but it should not be read as simply another vampire novel. “The Red Sun Rises” is a story about growing up, responsibility, falling in love, facing your fears and taking fate into your own hands.

Praise for “The Red Sun Rises”“The Red Sun Rises is the complete package, offering a little bit of everything to appeal not only to Twilight fans but also those fans of young adult novels ranging from Harry Potter to the Perks of Being a Wallflower, the Mortal Instruments to The Fault in Our Stars.” - Amazon.com review

“This is the kind of YA novel we need now, this is something I wish I could see on every shelf, in every store, in all libraries and schools. This book makes a statement. It's a book for all of the outcasts, the people who didn't fit in for whatever reason. This book makes sense to them. It's a story about being an outcast, fitting in, making your own choices, and standing up for what you believe in. There's so much to this novel, comparing it to any other vampire novel, especially Twilight would do nothing but dim it! Look past your preconceptions, keep an open mind, and experience this wonderful piece of YA fiction that is great for teens and for adults. This book needs to be read, read it, and share it. Buy a copy for your friend. You won't regret it.” -
Amazon.com review

“The Red Sun Rises is a captivating book that will appeal to readers of not just the YA audience, and will leave you waiting with great anticipation for the sequel.” - Amazon.co.uk review“It is refreshingly direct, challenging, witty, and an honest reflection of the challenges we each face growing up. The plot is streamlined and engaging and at no point do the characters feel contrived to nudge you to any conclusion. You aren't talked down to or expected to accept any moral imperatives. What you take from the book is yours alone. This book is brilliant simply because every page is awash with honesty. The language is refreshingly grounded and people actually sound like people. Gone are the clichĆ©d pre-watershed aphorisms or idioms that are constantly substituted for the way teenagers speak. The "screw yous" and "ticked offs" are, when appropriate, abandoned for something much more likely.” - Amazon.co.uk review

Tune in Tomorrow for the winner of the Book!

1 Year Anniversary Contest!

Happy birthday to us!

Yes, readers, we've been around for a whole year, and we want to celebrate with YOU!  Mostly because we already think you're pretty awesome, so you must be just as awesome to party with.

Let me tell you a little story. See, this blog was born because I was going to read Going Bovine by Libba Bray. I told Cassy this, and she expressed her opinion about the book. I read it, and told my fiance Birk that I totally disagreed with what Cassy said about the book. And as we all know, that never happens. He said he thought we should start a blog where we review books together because we so often find different things in the same books. And thus, Review Me Twice was born!

We were so cute.

Which is why we're giving away a copy of Going Bovine, the book that started it all, this week! (We're also reviewing it this week!)

So, what do you have to do to win this fabulous prize? Send us a photo of yourself with your favorite book. Here are the rules:

This really has no relevance to the contest, but it's Libba Bray in a cow suit
and I felt that it was something that had to be shared.

- One submission per person.
- Email your photo to reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com or post it (or a link to it) in the comments of this post. These are the ONLY TWO PLACES we will take your photos.
- Be family-friendly (no nudity, drugs, bad words, whatever).  If your favorite book happens to have a bad word in the title, well, we won't hold it against you. It should be something you're okay with the whole internet seeing, because if you win, your photo will be posted here on the blog.
- Be creative!
- No, really, we mean it.  BE CREATIVE!
- Photos must be received by 11:59pm EST on Friday, October 4.
- Cassy and Alex will vote for their favorite, based on creativity, humor, and execution (example: blurry, hard-to-see photos lose points). If we can't agree on a favorite, we'll agree on a tiebreaker person and have that person choose between our two favorites.
- The winner (AND THEIR PHOTO) will be posted Sunday, October 6.
- The winner will have until 11:59pm EST on Saturday, October 12 to email reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com with a valid mailing address within the     contiguous 48 United States for us to mail the prize to.
- If we don't get a mailing address as described above by the deadline, Cassy gets to keep the book or donate it to the library or return it to the bookstore   or whatever she chooses to do to it.

If you have questions about the contest, post them in the comments to this post, or email us at reviewmetwice [at] gmail [dot] com!

For examples, check out our (unofficial, we aren't entering the contest) submissions below!

Game of Thrones Giveaway!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, readers! Is it your lucky day? We'll see...

This coming week, we'll be reading Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. If you haven't hopped on the bandwagon and found out what all the hype is about - or if you love the book and just don't have your very own copy - you can win one from Review Me Twice!

How to enter:
- Comment on this post! You can comment once per day this week (through Saturday, March 23, 2013) and each comment will be counted as an entry.  You must comment on THIS POST ("Game of Thrones Giveaway!") for your comment entry to count.  You also MUST be signed in or give us a way to contact you!  If you're logged in as "Unknown" and don't leave a name/email, we don't really have a way of letting you know that you've won.
- Like us on Facebook for another entry. (If you already like our page, you will automatically be entered once.) (Facebook does not allow us to see everyone who likes our page, so this option is now invalid. Sorry for any confusion.  However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't like us!  You should totally still hit that "like" button.)
- Comment on our Facebook announcement of this contest for another entry (once).
- Share our page/our post on Facebook.  One entry/day.
- One tweet per day to @ReviewMeTwice or retweet of our posts, posted between now and midnight EST on Saturday, March 23, 2013, counts as another entry. (While we encourage you to tweet/retweet us as much as possible, you will only get one extra entry/day.) Following us on Twitter does not give you an entry but you should do it anyway.

You can have a maximum of 23 22 entries: 7 for commenting on this post daily; 1 for liking us on Facebook; 1 for commenting on our Facebook announcement of this giveaway; 7 for sharing our page/post on Facebook daily; 7 for tweeting at us or retweeting our post daily.

How to win:
We will compile all the entries (as defined above) and, at midnight EST on March 24, 2013, we will choose one at random to be our winner. The winner will be announced here on the blog on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 8am EST. When the winner is chosen, they will be notified through the medium in which they entered (Facebook, Twitter, or on the blog) and also in the blog post on Sunday, March 24, 2013, and given instructions on how to give us their mailing information so that we can mail the prize to them.

Eligibility:
Winner must live in the contiguous 48 United States (or provide a mailing address there). Entries must be in English (not hating on other languages, but it's the only language we both speak, and we want to be able to understand you) and must be intelligible (no gibberish or spamming... try to at least write a sentence of some value). "Intelligible" is up to our discretion and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as needed. There is no age requirement for eligibility.

Other Important Details:
Prize will be mailed via United States Postal Service, with no signature required. A delivery confirmation number will be provided to the winner upon mailing, via email. We are not responsible for delivery errors made by the USPS.
Prize is a new paperback copy of George R. R. Martin's novel, Game of Thrones, first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
If the winner refuses the prize (example: winner commented without meaning it to be an entry) a second winner will be chosen. If the winner does not provide a valid mailing address within one week of winner announcement (to be posted on the blog on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 8am EST), a second winner will be chosen. If the second winner refuses the prize or does not provide a valid mailing address within one week of being announced, no further winners will be chosen, and the prize will be donated to the Friends of the Virginia Beach Public Library.

Questions:
If you have questions, comment on this post, tweet us @ReviewMeTwice (it will count as an entry!), or email us at ReviewMeTwice [at] gmail [dot] com.
