Famous first lines

This is totally just something for fun.  I'm going to give you a list of first lines in books.  You tell me the book/author (or just the book is fine.)  On Sunday, I'll give you all the answers.

I have one big, fat rule.  Please, PLEASE do not go onto the internet and look them up and then answer them all.  This is not a contest; we're not giving anything away; it's just to be fun.  So if you know it, GREAT.  Comment and tell us!  If you don't, then leave it be in case someone else does.

Also, as people guess the right answers, I'm going to cross them out. :D

    1. Hahaha...one of the ones I got wrong is the correct answer for one of the others on the list. I've actually read it, but obviously couldn't remember the first line.

    2. Just for the record of others:
      29 is wrong
      27 is wrong.
24 is right, even though you didn't give a name. ;)
18 is right but that's not what the book is called. :P

And "Alice in Wonderland" IS the first one. Through The Looking Glass is the sequel.

    3. See? This is what happens when you make me answer without Google. I get a whole bunch of little things wrong. It was Little Women, BTW, which I totally facepalmed at. I didn't know what #12 was, but when I read it I was like "oh, that's gotta be some Jane Austen thing".

    1. Then you should get on that punching, because he was right (about #5, also, but not the rest.)

You actually got all the ones you guessed right. I knew you would get The Time Traveller's Wife. I kind of put it on there for you. :D

Haha, I was SURE Kristina would get Moby Dick, but then she didn't. When I saw you missed it at first I was like, "OMG, WHY DON'T YOU KNOW MOBY DICK!" but then you redeemed yourself, so it's ok.

      I'm REALLY surprised you didn't get 44 or 27. ESPECIALLY 27.

    2. You should not be surprised. I looked them up. I have never read either of those books, but I have seen the films.
